Body left at abandoned rest area in past day, Lexington County Sheriff’s Dept. says
An investigation is underway after a man’s body was found by the woods, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.
The body was discovered at an abandoned rest area on Interstate 20, the sheriff’s department said on Twitter. The old rest stop is on the westbound side of I-20, between the 49 and 48 mile markers, according to the tweet.
That’s just beyond Exit 51 for Longs Pond Road, outside of the town of Lexington.
A trooper with South Carolina Highway Patrol discovered the body Wednesday morning, sheriff’s department spokesman Capt. Adam Myrick told The State.
Because Highway Patrol regularly monitors the former rest area, investigators believe the body was placed there sometime after Tuesday afternoon, according to Myrick.
The man was found at the edge of the woods, the sheriff’s department tweeted.
The sheriff’s department said it is too early in the investigation to say if foul play is suspected in the man’s death, or place a timeline on when he died.
The Lexington County Coroner’s office will publicly identify the man after notifying his family, and determining his cause of death.
Major crimes detectives and crime scene investigators are on the scene, as the sheriff’s department continues to investigate the death.
