Coroner identifies 72-year-old Midlands woman killed in shooting crossfire
A little more than a day after a 72-year-old woman died in a shooting, multiple people were arrested, the Newberry Police Department said.
Four people were taken into custody for their roles in the shooting, Police Chief Roy McClurkin told The State Monday.
Information on the people, and the charges they are facing, was not immediately available, but McClurkin said an update is expected on Monday.
The Newberry woman who died was identified as Carolyn Sims, according to Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece.
Officers responded to a shots fired call at about 11 p.m. Saturday, police said in a news release. When they arrived to the 2300 block of Holloway Street, officers found the woman who had been shot, according to the release. That’s less than two miles from Newberry’s historic district, and the Newberry Opera House.
Sims told the officers that people in a car and a truck were shooting, and she was caught in the crossfire and hit as she got out of her vehicle, police said.
When Sims was being taken to a Prisma Health hospital in Richland County, she went into cardiac arrest and died, according to the release.
An autopsy on Sims is scheduled for Tuesday, according to the coroner’s office.
“This was a tragedy that took the life of an innocent victim,” McClurkin said in the release. “This senseless gun violence must stop. We will work tirelessly to find the persons responsible for this crime and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.”
Both police and the coroner’s office are still investigating the shooting, and anyone with information is asked to call 803-321-1010, or CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
