Midlands man and sons killed in shooting that injures pregnant woman, police say
A Midlands man and his two adult sons were killed in an overnight shooting that also wounded a pregnant woman and forced her into emergency childbirth, the Sumter Police Department said Sunday.
Raymond Davis, 61, and sons Randy Davis, 36, and Marcus Davis, 32, died at the scene, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said.
A 21-year-old Sumter woman was also shot and had to be taken to an area hospital where she underwent an emergency cesarean delivery, police spokeswoman Tonyia McGirt said in a news release.
The woman is in stable condition and expected to recover, but the infant is in critical condition, according to the release.
Two other people were at the home during the shooting but were not injured, according to the release.
The shooting happened Saturday night, and at about 11 p.m. officers responded to a shots fired call at a home in the 1000 block of Marilyn Avenue, police said. That’s in Sumter, near the junction of U.S. 76 and U.S. 378.
Witnesses said Eugene Martin, who lives about two miles away from the Marilyn Avenue home, was a lone gunman who came into the home shooting, according to police.
Martin was arrested on Sunday morning, McGirt said. The 27-year-old Sumter resident was taken to the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center where he was charged with three counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, first-degree burglary, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and malicious injury to property, according to the release.
Martin remains behind bars awaiting a bond hearing, jail records show.
Information on a motive for the gunfire was not available.
Autopsies have been scheduled for later in the week at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.
Both the police and coroner’s office are investigating the shooting, and more information is expected to be released this week, according to McGirt.
