Columbia woman charged after motorcyclist dies in Richland County collision

A 62-year-old Columbia woman has been charged after a motorcyclist died Thursday night.

Yvette Gonzalez is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

About 8:10 p.m. Thursday, a motorcyclist was driving west on Clemson Road, near Salusbury Lane, when the Harley Davidson struck a Jeep Cherokee, throwing the motorcyclist off the bike, Highway Patrol said.

Gonzalez, driving westbound in her Honda Accord, hit the motorcyclist, whose name has not be released.

The motorcyclist, who died at the hospital, was not wearing a helmet in the collision, Highway Patrol said.

Gonzalez fled the scene, but was later found and arrested, according to police. She was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The collision is still under investigation.
