13-year-old killed in shooting, Columbia police say

A 13-year-old male was killed in a shooting late Sunday night, the Columbia Police Department said.

The shooting happened at about 11 p.m. at the Harbison Gardens apartment complex, police said Monday. That’s near Columbiana Drive, less than a mile from Columbiana Centre shopping mall.

Police said they believe the teenager and a young friend were handling a gun when the shooting happened.

Information if the gunfire was considered an accident, or if any criminal charges are possible, was not available.

Investigators are trying to find out where the gun came from and how the kids got a hold of it police said. The shooting continues to be investigated by police.

Area residents said there was a large law enforcement presence after the shooting, according to posts on Facebook.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the teen.
