Search ends for armed man who took car with child inside, SC deputies say
The search for an armed man who took a car with a young boy inside has ended, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
Hours after he was taken while in the car Tuesday, the 6-year-old was found safe and unharmed, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Around 9:30 p.m. Friday, 31-year-old Rahem Laquan Devoe turned himself in to deputies with out incident, the sheriff’s office said.
Devoe is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center on first-degree domestic violence and kidnapping charges, the sheriff’s office said.
At about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Devoe and the mother of the child had a verbal argument which turned into a physical assault, according to the sheriff’s office. The incident occurred at 5412 Jefferson Davis Highway, the sheriff’s office said. That’s a Circle K gas station/convenience store in the Beech Island area, near the junction with Interstate 520, and not far from the state line between South Carolina and Georgia.
Devoe took the black four-door car while the child was seated in the backseat, according to the release.
Devoe is not related to the child, the sheriff’s office said.
At about 10:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office said the boy was located after he was brought back to the gas station.
The car was also recovered at 4667 Jefferson Davis Highway, according to the release. That’s about 3 miles from the Circle K where the incident happened.
