There are too many collisions in Lexington, and that’s why the Lexington Police Department will conduct several checkpoints on Monday, Chief Terrence Green said Sunday.

Green said in a news release his department has also heard from residents complaining about traffic problems.

Officers at the checkpoints will ask for driver’s licenses, vehicle registration and insurance requirements, Green said.

Sgt. Cameron Mortenson of the Lexington Police Department said there are some 130 to 150 crashes in the town each month and those numbers have started trending up, and 95% of them are avoidable.

They are caused most commonly by people running red lights, speeding or talking on cell phones, he said.

Mortenson said about 100,000 cars per day pass through the town.

Citizen complaints include speeding in neighborhoods and running stop signs, he said.

“The Lexington Police Department is committed to ensuring safer roadways within the Town of Lexington for its citizens and visitors through enforcement and education,” the news release announcing the checkpoints said.

While Green announced there would be checkpoints, he didn’t say precisely where they will be.
