Woman killed in shooting at Columbia apartment identified by coroner
The woman who was killed over the weekend in a shooting at a Columbia apartment complex where college students live was publicly identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office Monday.
Jamacia Dowling is the 20-year-old Columbia woman who died after the shooting at Green Crossing Apartments, Coroner Naida Rutherford said.
In addition to Dowling, four other people were hurt in the early Sunday morning shooting, according to the Columbia Police Department. A 22-year-old male, a 19-year-old male and two 16-year-old males were also injured and taken to an area hospital, police said.
At about 2 a.m., officers responded to the shooting at the apartment complex at 810 Pulaski St., police said. That’s within a couple of blocks of both Huger Street and Colonial Life Arena.
Greene Crossing Apartments is marketed as an apartment complex primarily for college students.
University of South Carolina police said none of the victims are affiliated with USC.
Two of the victims were treated and released, according to the news release. There was no word on which victims were released.
Further information on the conditions of the other shooting victims was not available, but USC police said none of the injuries were life threatening.
None of the victims are residents at Greene Crossing Apartments, police told The State.
The victims were at a party inside the apartment when an argument started and multiple people began shooting, police said. There was no word on how many people were firing guns or what they were arguing about prior to the shooting.
David Bykalo was walking into Greene Crossing Square apartments Monday to visit his daughter, whom he had not seen since the shooting.
Bykalo’s daughter, a senior USC student, was not at the apartment complex at the time of the shooting because she was on spring break, but said she was “shocked” and “dismayed” about the shooting.
Although Bykalo’s daughter didn’t know anyone involved with the shooting, it’s still upsetting.
”You hear about this stuff happening but you never expect it where you live,” Bykalo said.
Another resident, who declined to provide her name, said the shooting happened on the floor where she lives. The woman said she was asleep when the shooting happened, but said her roommates heard gunshots and the sound of people running.
Ami Patel, a USC student who lives in Greene Crossing square, was walking down Pulaski street when she spoke to The State Monday. She said she did not know anybody involved and wasn’t at the apartment complex at the time of the shooting, but said it made her scared.
“Usually, you’d think this place is safe to live,” Patel said.
As of Monday morning, no arrests were reported, but the shooting continues to be investigated by police.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
