6-year-old killed in drive-by shooting identified by coroner’s office

A 6-year-old child was killed in a drive-by shooting Friday night, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Winston Hunter died at the scene, the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office said Monday. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said the child was killed at about 11:35 p.m. Friday when the occupants of a car fired into a residence on McClain Street in the town of North.

Ravenell said in a news release that investigators worked through the night to identify the shooter or shooters.

No arrests have been reported by the sheriff’s office, which continues to investigate the shooting.

There was no word on a motive for the gunfire.

“I can think of no more clear example of a cowardly act than what has happened here,” Ravenell said in the release. “If you may have or know someone who may have any tidbit of information connected with this, I urge you to call us.”

Anyone with information on the deadly shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 803-534-3550, or CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

No funeral plans for the child have been made public, but they will be announced by W. B. Crumel Funeral Home of North, according to an obituary.
