Chase involving officer and motorcyclist ends in crash, deadly shooting, SC police say

State agents are investigating the shooting of a motorcyclist by an Aiken County deputy after a chase, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

Arthur C. Page II, a 58-year-old Aiken resident was the man killed, according to Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables.

Just before 1 a.m. Saturday, the Aiken County deputy tried to pull over the driver of a Harley Davidson motorcycle on East Pine Log Road near Trailwood Avenue. That’s about three miles from the center of Aiken.

The motorcyclist sped away and the deputy chased him, according to the sheriff’s office. The motorcyclist sped down Whiskey Road toward the town of New Ellenton and turned on U.S. Highway 278 toward Beech Island. The chase continued onto Interstate 520 and Interstate 20, the sheriff’s office said.

That route is at least 35 miles.

The chase ended when the motorcyclist veered onto the side of I-20 and crashed near mile marker 11, investigators said.

The office gave few details about the shooting but said a shootout occurred between at least one officer and the motorcyclist after his crash. The motorcyclist was shot in the upper body and pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics. The officer was not injured, according to investigators.

The identity of the victim will be released after his family is notified the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said Saturday morning.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
