Wanted man surrenders day after opening fire in downtown Columbia, police say

An arrest has been made the day after a man was critically injured in a weekend shooting in downtown Columbia, according to police.

After turning himself in to law enforcement officers, Kenneth Cannon Jr. was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the Columbia Police Department said Monday.

No bond has been set for the 28-year-old who was arrested Monday and is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, jail records show.

The shooting happened Saturday at about midnight near the intersection of Main and Washington streets, Lt. W.E. Pegram told The State. That’s two blocks from Gervais Street and the South Carolina State House.

The shooting took place on the street, not inside any business, according to Pegram.

The victim and the man police say pulled the trigger knew each other before the shooting, and were arguing inside Sky Bistro Lounge.

“Due to the altercation, business security escorted both men outside,” police said.

Once outside, there was a conflict, and a man pulled out a gun and fired at least four shots, Pegram said. The shooter left the scene after the person he had a dispute with was injured, according to Pegram.

Police said the victim was shot in the lower body and is in critical condition, but further information was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word about why the men argued prior to the gunfire, but police are continuing to investigate.

Police said they believe the shooting was an isolated incident.
