Police clear Lexington County home that was scene of siege, reports say
A standoff at an abandoned property in Lexington County ended Thursday when police cleared the building.
A spokesman for the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, which deployed its SWAT team to assist South Congaree police in the standoff, confirmed to The State that the operation had concluded.
Police had told people to stay away from the area near an abandoned home in Lexington County where two people had barricaded themselves inside.
The area is near the intersection of Dunbar Road and Church Street, the South Congaree Police Department said Thursday at about 2:15 p.m. That’s in the South Congaree area between Fish Hatchery Road and Edmund Highway.
Two people accused of being burglars were believed to be barricaded inside the home, according to police. One of the individuals was armed, WIS reported.
Information about how the people wound up barricaded inside the home, or if they had any prior connection to it, was not immediately available.
There was no word on what the people are accused of burglarizing.
Messages left with police weren’t immediately returned.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is assisting police with the situation.
Deputies are providing tactical support and asked neighbors to be patient as they continue to “work to make sure everyone in the area stays safe,” sheriff’s department spokesman Capt. Adam Myrick told The State.
