An attempted traffic stop by the South Carolina Highway Patrol led to a car chase and gunfire in Marion and Dillon counties Monday, according to a statement from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

A highway patrol officer attempted to pull over a motorist in Marion County for a routine speeding violation Monday morning, the department said, but the driver of the speeding vehicle increased speed and led highway patrol on a chase into Dillon County.

The driver of the speeding vehicle then left their vehicle and allegedly began shooting at the highway patrol officer.

“Upon stopping and exiting the vehicle, the violator began shooting at the trooper, and both exchanged gunfire,” according to the statement.

The driver then ran into nearby woods. The highway patrol officer was not injured. The department did not say whether the driver of the car was injured, nor whether they had been arrested.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.
