Lexington County man killed by grandson publicly identified, according to coroner
A Midlands man was killed and his wife injured by their grandchild Friday inside a Lexington County home, according to the Cayce Police Department.
The shooting happened at about 2:30 p.m., at a home in the 1400 block of Sunnyside Drive, according to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. That’s in the area between U.S. 321 and the Congaree River.
Raymond Lee Toler, a 66-year-old Cayce resident, was shot after a verbal altercation with his grandson, Coroner Margaret Fisher said Sunday. Toler was shot multiple times in the upper body and died at the scene, according to Fisher.
The juvenile, whose age has not been made public, also shot at his grandmother, according to police. While she was not struck by gunfire, she was injured, police said.
She was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Fisher. Further information on her condition was not available.
The juvenile was arrested Friday afternoon after a call was made to the police at approximately 3 p.m.
Information about why the victim and his grandson were arguing was not available, and there was no word on a motive, or where the juvenile got a gun.
The juvenile was charged with murder, attempted murder and use of a weapon during a violent crime, police said.
Given the age of the shooter, police said no further information will be released at this time.
“The matter will be adjudicated through the Family Court system and the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice,” police said in a statement.
The shooting continues to be investigated by police and the coroner’s office.
Despite the arrest, law enforcement is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call police at 803-794-0456, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
