Man arrested after woman was killed in Mother’s Day shooting, Columbia police say

A female was shot and killed on Mother’s Day, and now a man has been charged with murder, the Columbia Police Department said.

On Tuesday, 48-year-old Columbia resident Barbara Dinkins was identified as the homicide victim, according to the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

The shooting happened Sunday at about 5 p.m. in the 2500 block of Orr Street, police said. That’s near the intersection with Two Notch Road, about half a mile from C.A. Johnson High School.

No other injuries were reported.

On Monday night, police said a man was taken into custody by its officers as well as members of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Elijah L. Lindsay was found at a gas station on West Beltline Boulevard, according to police. That’s about a mile from the crime scene.

In addition to murder, Lindsay was charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, police said.

Bond has not been set for the 43-year-old, who is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, jail records show.

Police said Lindsay and the female were acquaintances, but there was no word on a motive for the gunfire. Information about the nature of their relationship was not available.

Lindsay’s address is listed on Orr Street, Richland County court records show.

Police called the shooting an isolated incident.

Following a bond hearing, Lindsay is scheduled to next appear in court on June 23, according to judicial records.
