SC man killed in shooting, Lexington County coroner says
A South Carolina man was killed in a shooting, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday.
William Mark Bedenbaugh, a 56-year-old Batesburg resident, died after being shot on July 7, Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release.
The shooting happened shortly after midnight in the 1400 block of Samaria Highway, according to the release. That’s near Exit 39 on Interstate 20, and not far from the line separating Lexington and Aiken counties.
Bedenbaugh died at the scene after being shot once by another man, Fisher said. The bullet hit Bedenbaugh in the upper left chest, according to Fisher.
An autopsy performed Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston confirmed the cause of death as a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to the release.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word on the shooter, or any motive for the gunfire, and no arrests have been reported by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
A funeral service will be held for Bedenbaugh on July 25 at Steadman Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery, according to an obituary shared by Milton Shealy Funeral Home.
The Columbia native “had a heart of gold and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need,” the obituary said. “His infectious smile and outgoing personality made him a favorite among his family and friends.”
Bedenbaugh is survived by three sons and nine grandchildren, among other family members, according to the obituary.
“(He) loved spending time with his family, riding his motorcycle and being on Lake Murray,” the obituary said.
