West Columbia man tried to kill three people when he fired a rifle into a car, SC cops say
Two people were shot Tuesday night, and a man has been arrested, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said.
Ivy Tyrone Richardson Jr., a 52-year-old West Columbia resident, tried to kill three people in the shooting, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.
Richardson was charged with with three counts of attempted murder, along with single counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, unlawful possession of a weapon and firing a weapon into an occupied vehicle, jail records show.
The sheriff’s department said deputies believe the shooting was “an isolated incident between people who knew each other.”
“Based on the information deputies gathered on scene, Richardson shot a rifle multiple times into a car with three people inside,” Sheriff Jay Koon said in the release. “Detectives have determined this is connected to an ongoing property dispute.”
Richardson threatened to kill the victims multiple times before Tuesday’s shooting, according to Koon.
“Two people were hit by shots fired by Richardson,” Koon said. “Their medical teams tell us they’re expected to recover.”
Further information on their conditions was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
At about 6:15 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call about a shooting on Gardners Terrace Road, the sheriff’s department said. That’s in the West Columbia area, near the junction of U.S. 321 and U.S. 176, as well as the South Carolina State Farmer’s Market.
About 30 minutes later, deputies detained two men on unrelated charges, according to the sheriff’s department. One of the men was Richardson, who is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center, the sheriff’s department said.
Richardson was denied bond on all of the charges, jail records show.
This is not the first time Richardson has been arrested, and he was out on bond when the shooting occurred.
Richardson was arrested on Feb. 12 on domestic violence (of a high and aggravated nature) and first-degree domestic violence charges, according to Lexington County court records. His bond was set at a combined $42,000 on those charges which are still pending, court records show.
In 2021, Richardson pleaded guilty to a third-degree domestic violence charge, according to court records.
