FBI joins search for Midlands mom and son missing since June

FBI agents and other law enforcement agencies searched Beaufort County on Friday for a Sumter mother and her young son who have been missing for more than two months.

Sophia Van Dam, 20, and her 2-year-old son, Matteo, have been missing since June, according to a statement shared by the FBI Friday.

The FBI’s statement contained few details of the search or investigation but noted that agents conducted “various law enforcement activities” throughout Beaufort County Friday in search of the pair, along with members of the Sumter Police Department, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
