A person was shot in a car early Thanksgiving morning and died, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Just before 2 a.m. on Thursday, a victim was found with “at least” one gunshot wound to the body in the driver seat of a Toyota Camry. The car had crashed into a tree on Park Avenue near Fairfield Street in Aiken, officials said.

The victim was transported to Aiken Regional Medical Centers where they were pronounced dead from their injuries.

According to the coroner’s office, an autopsy will be performed in Newberry.

The Aiken Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s name once they have been identified and the victim’s family has been contacted.

The coroner’s office and the Aiken Department of Public Safety continue to investigate.
