A man who died after a pursuit by Cayce police late Friday night on Interstate 26 in the Cayce area of Lexington County has been identified, according to official news releases.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the deceased individual as Raheem Jamar Bonham, 30, of West Columbia.

Fisher said Bonham stopped his vehicle near the I-26’s 114-mile marker around 11:40 p.m. Friday.

Bonham then exited his vehicle, crossed over the center concrete divider and was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on I-26, according to the news release from the coroner’s office.

A press release by the S.C. Highway Patrol said Bonham’s vehicle “attempted to elude police officers from the Cayce police department” at the time he stopped and jumped out of his car on I-26 westbound and tried to cross the eastbound lanes. He was struck by a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu whose driver was unhurt, said Master Trooper Gary Miller in a recorded press release.

Bonham was pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries he sustained, Fisher said.

Cayce city officials released this statement: “Around 11:30 pm (Saturday), uniformed officers with Cayce PD attempted to stop a vehicle for driving with their high beams on the wrong way on Airport Blvd. The suspect fled and officers pursued the vehicle.

“Cayce officers witnessed what appeared to be drugs being thrown out of the vehicle and were later recovered on the side of the road. The suspect stopped his vehicle on I-26 and ran on foot across the interstate where he was hit by a vehicle. Cayce PD attempted all life-saving measures.”

The Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the incident, Fisher said.
