Newberry County sheriff’s deputies have charged a man with attempted murder after he allegedly fired multiple shots into several apartment complexes and wounded one victim.

Newberry County Sheriff’s Office officials said 30-year-old Joshua Stroud Gibbs, of Clinton, was charged with attempted murder and two counts of discharging a firearm into a dwelling in connection with the shooting.

Officials said on July 9 after 10 p.m. Gibbs allegedly rode by a set of apartment complexes located on Duckett Avenue in Whitmire firing multiple rounds at the apartments. A victim who was sitting outside on their porch was struck in the upper body and hands.

The victim was airlifted to a local hospital to receive treatment for his wounds, which do not appear life threatening at this time.

After an investigation, Gibbs was taken into custody, although details regarding his arrest were not made available.

Investigators said they do not have a motivation for the shooting but there is a clear theme of illegal drug sale and use throughout the investigation.
