A woman has been charged with DUI after allegedly veering off the road and hitting a Chapin police car early Saturday.

Officer J. Caulder was sitting along Columbia Avenue in Chapin when a vehicle being driven by Emma Elizabeth Ellis ran off the road at about 3:20 a.m., went across a ditch and struck the rear of Caulder’s patrol car, according to the Chapin Police Department.

Caulder was transported to the emergency room by EMS with minor injuries and was released a short time later.

Ellis was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. She was transported to the Lexington County Detention Center.

The accident happened near the intersection of Columbia Avenue and Brighton Boulevard, inside the town limits.
