Man said his dog was disrespected, then he started shooting, Richland County deputies say
A man who said his dog was disrespected by a construction crew was arrested Tuesday after a shooting, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
At about 2:45 p.m., deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the 1000 block of Rockyknoll Drive, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s in Columbia, not far from the intersection of Fairfield Road and Crane Church Road.
The deputies made contact with the victims, at a different location near where the shots were fired, according to the release.
The victims were working construction by the road when 25-year-old Deontra Jones engaged one of the victims in a verbal altercation, the sheriff’s department said. Jones felt a member of the construction crew had disrespected his dog, according to the release.
Information about how Jones’ dog was disrespected was not available.
Following the verbal spat, Jones went into his nearby home and reappeared with a gun and fired off a shot from the front porch, the sheriff’s department said. Jones returned inside the home and went to a window that was facing the workers and fired another round from inside the residence, according to the release.
The victims left the area to seek safety, the sheriff’s department said.
At the scene, deputies negotiated with Jones and got him to come out of the home, where he was arrested, according to the release.
No one was injured in the shooting, the sheriff’s department said.
Jones was charged with pointing and presenting a weapon in addition to breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature, according to the release.
Jones was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, the sheriff’s department said. No bond has been set and Jones remains behind bars, jail records show.
After his bond hearing, Jones is scheduled to next appear in court on May 31, Richland County judicial records show.
Jones was out on bond when Tuesday’s shooting happened, according to court records. He was charged with malicious injury to animals, personal property, and injury (value $2,000 or less) when arrested Nov. 11, 2023, court records show.
