1-year-old is shot inside house hit by multiple rounds in drive-by shooting, SC cops say
A 1-year-old child was shot early Saturday morning and a search is underway for the person who pulled the trigger, according to the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office.
The baby is doing well in his recovery after his elbow was grazed by a bullet in the drive-by shooting, the sheriff’s office said Monday in a news release. Further information on the 1-year-old’s condition was not available.
The shooting happened Saturday at about 12:30 a.m. when a home in the 600 block of St. Paul Road was hit, according to the release. That’s in Camden, near St. Paul United Methodist Church, not far from the junction with the U.S. 521 Bypass.
Witnesses said a light colored SUV had its headlights off when it slowly approached the home, and at least one person began firing multiple shots, the sheriff’s office said.
The 1-year-old victim was the only person hit by the gunfire, according to the release. No other injuries were reported.
There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about a motive for the shooting was not available.
The sheriff’s office said it thinks that the home was the shooter’s intended target.
“We do not believe this was a random shooting,” Sheriff Lee Boan said in the release. “It appears to have been planned. The only thing we know for sure right now is our 1-year-old victim had absolutely nothing to do with the poor decision made by the shooter.”
No arrests have been reported, and the shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 803-425-1512 or 803-424-4000, or via email at Investigations@kershaw.sc.gov. Tips can also be submitted to CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or online.
