Man killed in weekend shooting in Columbia is identified by SC coroner’s office

A man is dead following an overnight shooting on King Street, the Columbia Police Department announced Saturday.

Eugene Bell Jr., a 32-year-old Columbia resident, was identified as the victim, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Monday.

Officers were called to the 1200 block of King Street in the Melrose Heights neighborhood around midnight. The area is east of downtown Columbia.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about a motive for the shooting was not available.

No arrests have been reported, but police said one person was detained for questioning in the shooting that remains under investigation.
