Victim was found in the woods and a man was charged with multiple crimes, SC sheriff says
A South Carolina man was recently arrested on multiple charges after a severely-beaten victim was found in the woods, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
Jerry William Hall Jr., a 29-year-old Batesburg resident, was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, third-degree assault and battery, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of certain crimes and possession of meth, the sheriff’s department said Tuesday in a news release.
The attack happened Aug. 22, and deputies responded to a house on Bayonet Road after a neighbor called 911, Sheriff Jay Koon said in the release.
Witnesses told investigators over the course of nine hours, Hall assaulted the victim multiple times and locked the victim in the house after trying to escape, according to the release.
“Investigators determined Hall punched the victim, kicked them with his steel-toed boots and restricted their airway to the point of unconsciousness,” Koon said.
When witnesses entered the house, Hall threatened to kill them as well, according to the release.
“By the time deputies arrived on scene, Hall had left the house,” Koon said. “Deputies received information Friday that Hall was in the 100 block of Buggy Road where he was detained.” That’s about 5 miles from Bayonet Road.
Hall was arrested and taken to the Lexington County Detention Center where he continues to be held after a judge denied his bond on four of the five charges, jail records show.
There was no word about how the victim wound up in the woods. Further information on the victim’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
Information about a motive for the attack was not available.
