Body found by officers who were responding to a shooting, South Carolina coroner says

One person was killed Wednesday in a shooting, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

William Mathis, a 42-year-old Aiken resident, was the man who died, Coroner Darryl Ables said Thursday in a news release.

An Aiken Department of Public Safety officer was responding to a report about a shooting on Columbia Avenue Northeast when a victim was discovered nearby on Chesterfield Street, Ables said. That’s in the city limits, not far from Aiken High School.

The victim had been shot in the body and was taken to an area hospital, according to the release. The victim died at 11:13 p.m., and the coroner’s office was called to the hospital, Ables said.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or if anyone else was involved in the gunfire. Information about a motive for the shooting was not available.

No arrests have been reported by the Aiken Department of Public Safety, which is continuing to investigate the death along with the coroner’s office.

An autopsy has been scheduled for next week in Newberry, according to the release.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
