Child who was shot while inside house that was riddled with bullets has died, SC cops say

A child has died days after he was shot inside a home that was riddled with bullets, according to South Carolina officials.

Nine-year-old Gregory Robinson Jr. died Wednesday, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office also confirmed Gregory’s death at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Gregory was shot while in his home early Monday morning, according to Baker. The child was in his bed when the shooting happened, the sheriff’s office said.

Multiple rounds hit the Bunneau Street home, which is between West Brewington Road and U.S. 521/Thomas Sumter Highway in Sumter, according to sheriff’s office.

At about 1:45 a.m. Monday, a deputy heard multiple gunshots, and multiple calls were made to 911 to report the shooting, the sheriff’s office said.

Gregory was taken by EMS to a hospital, according to the sheriff’s office. He was being treated at Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia when he died, Baker said.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or if Gregory’s home was the intended target. Information about a motive for the shooting was not available.

No arrests have been reported by the sheriff’s office, which is continuing to investigate the death along with the coroner’s office, the Sumter Police Department and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. An autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

“We will do whatever it takes to find these criminals,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said Wednesday at a meeting announcing the formation of a task force to find Gregory’s killers. “Our investigators have been working non-stop and every tool available will be utilized to solve this crime. ... I firmly believe that we will find those responsible for Gregory’s murder and bring them to justice.”

At the task force meeting, Dennis announced there’s a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Gregory’s killers.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 803-436-2000, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.
