7-year-old was shot by teenager at sleepover, South Carolina sheriff says

A child was shot Saturday night during a sleepover at a South Carolina home and a teenager has been arrested, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 11:35 p.m., emergency officials received a 911 call about a 7-year-old being shot, and deputies responded to a home in the 400 block of Crosby Circle, the sheriff’s office said Sunday in a news release. That’s in Greenville, near Exit 46 on Interstate 85.

Deputies found the child who had been shot at least once in the abdomen, and he was taken to an area hospital, according to the release. Further information on the 7-year-old’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

Following an investigation, deputies arrested a 13-year-old male after discovering the teen shot the victim while at what was believed to be a sleepover at the victim’s house, the sheriff’s office said.

The teen had left the victim’s home and was later located at his residence, just a few houses away, according to the release.

There was no word about any charges pending against the 13-year-old.

Information about a motive for the shooting was not available, or how the teen got a gun, but it continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office.

There was no word if the teen is still in custody, and if so, where he is being held.
