South Carolina authorities are searching for a man wanted for murder, advising the public to remain vigilant.

The Chapin Police Department is working with the U.S. Marshal Service in trying to locate Nicholas Wayne Hamlett, who is wanted for Murder out of Tennessee, according to a news release.

Hamlett, police say, is believed to have family in the Chapin area, and was last seen near Chapin High School and Generations of Chapin near 431 East Boundary St. early Friday morning.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, converged on the area, setting up a perimeter using a helicopter and K-9s, but to no avail.

Police say while they continue to search for Hamlett, the public should “use extreme caution” in the Chapin area.

“There is still a heavy law enforcement presence in the Town of Chapin, and this presence will remain in place until the suspect is apprehended or confirmed to no longer be in the area,” Chapin Police Chief Thomas Griffin said in the release.

Anyone who sees anything suspicious or has information about Hamlett’s whereabouts is urged to dial 911.

Griffin advised the public will be updated through the Chapin Police Department’s Facebook page.
