A trusted member of a private South Carolina university’s alumni association stole nearly $80,000 while serving as treasurer, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Paulette Regina Mack, 53, was charged Monday with breach of trust with fraudulent intent, valuing more than $10,000, a SLED news release said. Mack, who served as treasurer for the National Alumni Association for Voorhees University in Denmark — an historically Black college and university — is accused of stealing $79,000 from the alumni association between 2021 and 2023, according to an affidavit distributed with the SLED news release.

Mack converted tens of thousands of dollars for her own use through unauthorized cash withdrawals and debit card expenses, the release said.

She admitted to stealing the funds during an online meeting with university alumni association board members and through email sent to the members.

If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and/or a fine. She was booked into the Bamberg County Detention Center.
