Section of Columbia blocked off because of mental-health emergency, SC police say

A mental-health emergency on Tuesday afternoon prompted police to close off a section of Columbia to all traffic.

There was a large law enforcement officer presence at 1100 block of Fairview Road, off of Milwood Avenue, according to the Columbia Police Department. That’s in the part of Columbia between Gervais Street and Devine Street, not far from the Five Points area.

Officers blocked all vehicle and pedestrian traffic from entering the area, police said. As of 4 p.m., the 1100 block of Fairview Drive remained temporarily closed.

“The mental health-related emergency on Fairview/Millwood Avenue has been resolved,” Columbia Police said on social media platform X at 3:34 p.m. “A male believed to be in mental crisis will receive medical treatment. Additional #ColumbiaPDSC specialized units & partner agencies responded to the scene as a precaution.”

There was no immediate threat to the public and no evacuation orders were issued, according to police.
