Woman found dead in her South Carolina home and her ex-husband was arrested, police say
A woman’s body was found in her South Carolina home Wednesday and her ex-husband has been charged in the fatal shooting, the Sumter Police Department said.
On Thursday, 79-year-old Sherri Swoger Redmond was identified as the victim by Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker. She died at the scene from injuries she suffered in an apparent shooting, according to Baker.
Her ex-husband, 78-year-old William Forrest Redmond Jr., was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, police said.
At about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a call about a shooting at a Mimosa Road home, according to police.
In addition to discovering Sherri Redmond’s dead body, officers also found William Redmond at the home when they arrived, police said. Despite being divorced, William Redmond also lived at the residence, according to police.
William Redmond was taken into custody and later booked into the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
Police said they learned there was an ongoing dispute between the couple and called the shooting domestic-related.
Both police and the coroner’s office are continuing to investigate the death.
An autopsy will be performed Saturday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.
