Man arrested at traffic stop has been wanted for months, SC cops say. Here’s his charges
A months-long manhunt for a South Carolina man wanted on multiple sex crime charges ended when the vehicle he was driving was pulled over, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies have been searching for 35-year-old Sumter resident Bobby James Witherspoon since June, the sheriff’s office said Monday in a news release.
Witherspoon was wanted on first-degree criminal sexual conduct and incest charges, according to the release.
On June 23, deputies responded to a local hospital after learning a victim of a sexual crime was receiving medical care, the sheriff’s office said. Information on the victim’s condition was not available.
After evaluating evidence, a judge signed a warrant for Witherspoon’s arrest, according to the release.
But it wasn’t until Dec. 16 that Witherspoon was taken into custody, the sheriff’s office said. During a traffic stop, members of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office found Witherspoon was wanted on warrants from Sumter County, according to the release.
Sumter County deputies were notified and drove the 70-plus miles to Berkeley County, where they extradited Witherspoon, the sheriff’s office said.
Witherspoon was booked at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, according to the release. Bond was set at $20,000 on the combined charges, and Witherspoon has been released, officials said.
There was no word if there were any other victims.
