Woman charged with murder after victim dies in SC hospital, Richland County sheriff says

A woman was arrested after a man was shot earlier in December, and one of her charges was later upgraded to murder after the victim died, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Alexis Wider, 30, was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s department said Monday in a news release.

The shooting happened Dec. 9, according to the release.

Just before 8 a.m. on Dec. 9, deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the 400 block of Percival Road, the sheriff’s department said. That’s in Columbia, near Exit 12 on Interstate 77.

A family member of the victim led deputies to the man who had been shot in the torso, according to the release.

The victim was taken to an area hospital, where he died two days later, the sheriff’s department said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the man.

No other injuries were reported.

On Dec. 9, deputies identified Wider as the shooter, according to the release. The sheriff’s department said that Wider was the victim’s neighbor, but information about a motive for the shooting was not available.

Wider left the area by the time deputies arrived, but later that day her vehicle was spotted, according to the release. Deputies performed a traffic stop and Wider was arrested on the weapons charge in addition to one count of attempted murder, the sheriff’s department said.

The attempted murder charge was upgraded to murder after the victim died, according to the release.

No bond has been set, and Wider remains locked up at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, jail records show. The Hopkins resident was scheduled to appear in court Monday, according to Richland County judicial records.
