Richland County deputies investigating shooting at apartment complex

One was wounded Saturday evening after a suspect fired at a victim during an attempted armed robbery, Richland County Sheriff’s Department officials said.

Sgt. Kevin Lawrence, a department spokesman, said deputies were dispatched to the Palmetto Health Richland hospital in reference to a gunshot victim at about 8:30 p.m. When deputies arrived, the victim told them that he was standing outside of an apartment in the Richland Terrace apartment complex located in the 1200 block of Metze Road off Broad River Road when a black male suspect approached him.

Lawrence said the victim told deputies the suspect demanded money from the victim, but the victim told the suspect that he did not have any money on him. The suspect then brandished a handgun and shot the victim in the lower body.

The victim was able to flee from the scene and met with an acquaintance who drove him to the hospital to receive treatment, Lawrence said.
