South Carolina man is wanted after a body was found in a burning car, police said

A South Carolina man is wanted for questioning after a body was recently discovered inside a burning vehicle, the Sumter Police Department said Wednesday in a news release.

Officers are searching for 27-year-old Manning resident John Elliot Dingle, who police said might have information that could help the homicide investigation.

Police said Dingle “is affiliated with” 67-year-old Manning resident Willis Samuel Jr., whose remains were found inside a burning car at about 2:20 a.m. on Dec. 31, 2024. An autopsy was required to identify the human remains as Samuel’s, according to the release.

There was no word if Dingle is considered a suspect in the homicide.

The burning car was discovered behind an Eastwood Park apartment complex off Boulevard Road, police said.

Anyone who sees Dingle, or has information that can help locate him, is asked to call police at 803-436-2700, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

In addition to police, members of the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating what happened, why and who was involved.
