A body was found inside a burning building late Wednesday night, prompting a suspicious death investigation, according to the Columbia Police Department.

On Thursday, police said that the Richland County Coroner’s Office was assisting in the investigation. The coroner has neither publicly identified the victim nor announced a cause of death.

At about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a small structure fire at what was believed to be an unoccupied house in the 100 block of Cardamom Court, according to police.

Firefighters found the body and notified police.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word about why the death was considered suspicious and further information was limited, according to police.
