On duty police officer had sex by his patrol car on a college campus, SC cops say

A former police officer was recently arrested for engaging in sex acts while he was on duty, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

On Feb. 7, former McCormick Police Department officer Matthew Dillon Yonn was charged with misconduct in office, SLED said Tuesday in a news release.

The charge is connected to incidents involving the 28-year-old Greenwood resident that happened between April 1 and May 9, 2024, an arrest warrant shows.

“While acting in his capacity as a law enforcement officer for the Town of McCormick Police Department, (Yonn) did engage in sexual acts with a woman in the vicinity of his ... police department patrol vehicle at the Piedmont Technical College McCormick campus, and these sexual acts occurred while (he) was on duty and in uniform,” an affidavit said.

The McCormick County Sheriff’s Office asked SLED to lead an investigation.

Yonn was arrested based on evidence gathered by SLED, that included witness statements, surveillance video, dashcam video from his patrol vehicle and Yonn’s confessions, according to the affidavit.

Yonn was booked into the McCormick County Detention Center, SLED said. Information about his bond was not available, and there was no word if he remained in the jail.

The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, according to the release.

If convicted on the charge, Yonn faces a maximum punishment of a year in prison and a $1,000 fine, according to South Carolina law.

There was no word if Yonn was fired, or if he voluntarily left the police department.
