Two high school students were arrested after deputies discovered the pair possessed several weapons on school grounds, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

On Tuesday, a 15-year-old student at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm under 18 and two counts of possession of a weapon on school grounds after school administrators were alerted that the teen, along with another 17-year-old student, had brought guns to school, according to a news release. The 17-year-old was charged with possession of a firearm under 18 and possession of a weapon on school grounds.

In addition, both juveniles are suspected of participating in an attempted carjacking early Tuesday morning near Saddlerock Road and Concord Place, which is about 5 miles from Dutch Fork High School. For that offense, the 15-year-old was charged with armed robbery, carjacking, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a stolen vehicle, a news release said. So far, no additional charges have been brought against the 17-year-old, although deputies say the investigation is ongoing.

Following a tip that the students were carrying weapons while on campus, deputies immediately located and detained the juveniles, according to a news release. Upon searching the 15-year-old, deputies found a knife with a blade over six inches in the student’s book bag, the release said.

Deputies also searched the car both teens had arrived to school in and found two guns.

Both juveniles were booked at the state Department of Juvenile Justice.
