One person is dead after being struck by car traveling on U.S. 15 Friday, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Donna Dowd, a 59-year-old Florence County resident, is the pedestrian who died in what Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker called a “hit-and-run accident,” on Monday.

At around 9:41 p.m. Friday, an unknown vehicle struck Dowd, who was attempting to cross U.S. 15 at Lewis Road, according to the Highway Patrol. The car, which was traveling south on U.S. 15, drove away from the scene. Troopers said an investigation is underway.

Dowd was transported to an area hospital and later died, police say.
