After waking to noise, family then left SC home at the sound of breaking glass, cops say

Over the weekend a Midlands resident was awoken by a strange sound, and soon the entire family left their home, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The thing that went bump in the night and scared the family away turned out to be a South Carolina teenager who was arrested on multiple charges, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday in a news release.

Simon M. Welch, an 18-year-old Olanta resident, was charged with first-degree burglary and cocaine possession, according to the release.

At about 3 a.m. Saturday, a resident of a Commonwealth Court home woke to a noise and called 911, the sheriff’s office said. While on the phone with a dispatcher, the resident said they saw a person, later identified as Welch, attempting to get inside the home, according to the release.

At the sound of glass breaking, the family left the home, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies responded to the home while Welch was still inside, according to the release. Welch was arrested and taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center where he remains locked up after his bond was denied, the sheriff’s office said.

Information about why the teen allegedly forced his way into the home was not available. There was no word if he had a previous connection to the family.

No injuries were reported.
