A child died in a fatal collision, where the driver failed to properly secure the child in a safety seat, according to the Columbia Police Department. The driver is now in jail.

Maydellin Najarro-Macario, 23, was charged with reckless homicide, following a fatal collision that occurred at around 7 a.m. on Feb. 18, a news release said.

The accident happened at the 600 block of Spears Creek Church Road. When officers arrived on scene, they found a minor female non-responsive, who was transported to the hospital. The child was later pronounced dead.

Najarro-Macario is accused of failing to properly restrain the child in a car safety seat as required by law, a news release said. It was determined that the child was unrestrained in the passenger seat of the car at the time of the collision.

Najarro-Macario was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
