Disagreement turns into stabbing as SC man attacks and robs woman, Columbia police say

A man was recently arrested for two separate crimes he’s accused of committing last year, according to the Columbia Police Department.

On Wednesday, police said Gary Taylor was arrested on drug-related crimes, that included selling cocaine near a South Carolina school. Taylor was also charged with crimes connected to an incident where a woman was stabbed and robbed, according to police.

The 36-year-old Columbia resident was arrested March 13, Richland County court records show.

In July 2024, Taylor sold cocaine in the 2000 block of Park Street, which is near Logan Elementary School, police said. The locations are about a quarter-mile apart, separated by Elmwood Avenue in downtown Columbia.

Taylor was charged with drug crimes, including manufacture, distribution, etc. of cocaine base; as well as distribute, sell, manufacture or possession with intention to distribute, of controlled substance, near school; along with possession of cocaine and possession of crack cocaine (less than 1 gram), court records show.

Taylor is accused of stabbing a woman in August 2024 after a disagreement and stealing her money, police said.

Information about the victim’s condition was not available. There was no word if Taylor knew the victim prior to the incident, or about why they had a disagreement.

When he was recently arrested, Taylor also was charged with attempted murder, armed robbery (with a deadly weapon) and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to court records.

Information about why there was a delay between the incidents and the time that Taylor was arrested was not available.

Bond was set at $30,000 on the combined charges, and was posted March 15, court records show. Taylor, who is not currently listed on the inmate roster at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, is scheduled to return to court on May 30, according to court records.
