SC sheriff’s department chemist stole thousands of dollars in wages, SLED says

An employee at the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department lied about the number of hours she worked in order to secure more than $10,000 in wages, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Shekinah Shyann Sade Brown, 24, was charged Tuesday with obtaining a signature or property under false pretense, value $10,000 or more, according to an arrest warrant.

Between March and October 2024, Brown, while working as a chemist at the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, submitted false time sheets totaling 378 hours worth $10,568.19, the warrant said.

Using proximity cards and security camera footage, an investigation by SLED revealed that Brown was not present at work for the false hours claimed, according to the warrant.

Brown initially told investigators that the department allowed her to work from home, which turned out to be untrue.

She later admitted that her time sheets were false and inaccurate, the warrant said.

Brown was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center.
