Standoff on I-20 ends with man shooting himself, South Carolina coroner says
A recent standoff with an armed and dangerous man on Interstate 20 ended when he shot himself, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. Days later, the man died in a hospital, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said.
Dwayne Eduh — a 24-year-old Covington, Georgia, resident — was being treated at a hospital in Georgia when he died Sunday afternoon, Coroner Darryl Ables said.
On April 11 at about 3:55 a.m., deputies responded to a call for assistance from the Georgia State Patrol in locating Eduh, who was called an armed and dangerous man wanted on a murder charge in Newton County, Georgia, according to the sheriff’s office.
At the 32 mile marker on the eastbound side of I-20 — which is near the exit for Wagener, Ridge Spring and Monetta — deputies and South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers were involved in a standoff with Eduh, the sheriff’s said.
The standoff ended when Eduh suffered a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to Ables.
Deputies, troopers and Aiken County EMS preovided medical aid before Eduh was taken to Wellstar MCG in Augusta, Georgia, the sheriff’s office said.
No deputies were hurt, the sheriff’s office said. No other injuries were reported.
Both the sheriff’s office and coroner’s office are continuing to investigate Eduh’s death.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday in Newberry, Ables said.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office said Eduh was a Walmart employee who killed two of his coworkers and injured another in an April 11 shooting spree at both the store and at the Georgia home of one of the victims, WSB reported. Information about a motive for the shootings was not available.
