A Chesterfield County man died early Friday morning after losing control of his vehicle while attempting to elude Camden police, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The man, identified by the Kershaw County Coroner as 28-year-old Patrick Evans, of McBee, was driving north on Dr. Humphries Road shortly after 2 a.m. when his 2013 Toyota Tundra pickup truck swerved off the road to the left, struck several trees and a barrier fence, and flipped, Sgt. Tyler Tidwell said.

Evans, the vehicle’s lone occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene, Kershaw County Coroner David West said in a statement. He was not wearing a seat belt, the coroner said.

It’s not immediately clear why Evans was being pursued by police. The Camden police department could not immediately be reached for comment.
