‘Enough to kill 256,000 adults,’ SC sheriff says of drugs seized in traffic stop
A South Carolina man was arrested following a recent traffic stop on Interstate 26, but was charged with a crime for what was inside the car, not a traffic violation, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Rashawn Cream, a 39-year-old Columbia resident, was charged with trafficking in fentanyl (28 grams or more), Calhoun County court records show.
It was significantly more, as 512.5 grams of fentanyl was found in the car, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday in a news release. Sheriff Thomas Summers cited DEA statistics in the release, saying that amount of fentanyl is enough to kill 256,000 adults.
The street value of that amount of fentanyl can exceed $100,000, according to estimates from the Avenues Recovery — an organization that treats drug and alcohol addiction.
Cream was arrested March 27, the sheriff’s office said in the release. The sheriff’s department said it just now shared information about the arrest because Tuesday was National Fentanyl Awareness Day.
Cream was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Camaro at 80 mph through a construction zone on I-26, according to the release. He was pulled over by a K-9 unit working on the department’s Aggressive Criminal Enforcement team that included a police dog named Abram, the sheriff’s office said.
Cream’s bond was set at $500,000, and has not been posted, court records show.
“This was great police work and a great credit to the ACE team,” Summer said.
