Two high school students are facing charges of carrying guns on campus after they were arrested early Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for the city of Cayce confirmed two students at Brookland-Cayce High School were taken into custody after a search turned up the guns at the school Thursday. Cayce police and school resource officers acted on a tip to identify the students and find the weapons.

The Lexington 2 school district sent out an email about the incident that said the students were stopped before they could enter the building at the start of the school day. Each was found to be carrying a gun in their backpacks, one of which was loaded, the email said.

“Both students were taken into law enforcement custody and will face district discipline in accordance with board policy and state law,” the email said.

State law says that a person carrying a gun on campus can face up to a $5,000 fine and five years in prison.
