USC police warns of recent theft increase as students prepare for summer leave
The University of South Carolina Police Department is warning students of a recent uptick in campus thefts as students prepare for their summer departure.
In a crime bulletin issued Friday, USC police urged students, faculty and staff to be mindful of reported increases of electric bikes and scooters on and around campus.
As students move out of university housing, leaving doors unlocked and belongings unattended, thieves are more likely to act, police said in the bulletin.
The university bulletin advised the following precautions to protect students from theft:
- Secure bikes and scooters with a sturdy U-lock, locking both the frame and wheels to a designated bike rack. If available, inside locked storage is ideal.
- Never leave valuables unattended, even for a moment. Find a trusted friend to watch your stuff if you need to step away.
- Do not prop open residence hall doors or allow unauthorized individuals to enter behind you.
- Store bikes and valuables indoors while loading your vehicle, if possible.
- Always lock up your room, even when stepping out briefly.
- Keep your vehicle locked between loading and unloading.
- Move out during daylight hours when your surroundings are more visible.
- Avoid overloading your vehicle. A packed and unattended car can be a target—keep items hidden or in the trunk.
- Use carts carefully. Don’t place valuables on top where they can fall off or be easily stolen.
- Coordinate with roommates to maintain room security until the last person leaves.
- Shred personal documents before disposal to prevent identity theft.
- Register your valuables with USCPD in case of theft or loss.
Police encouraged campus members to report suspicions of theft using the RAVE Guardian safety app or by calling 803-777-4215.
